Why buy Travel Insurance?
Travel Insurance can protect you from losses that result from a variety of situations, including lost baggage, travel company errors, medical emergencies, cancelled trips, and many other unforeseen circumstances.
Most travel insurance coverages are found in one of four general policy types:
- Package Plans
- Medical Plans
- Flight Accidental Death plans
- Medical Evacuation/Repatriation
1. Package plans
Package plans are the most popular type of travel insurance. This type of plan is specifically designed for a single trip. Package plans are ideal for cruises, tours, air trips, vacation home rentals, whether foreign, domestic, or for leisure or business travel.
Package plans are usually pre-bundled by the insurance company and provides a wide range of travel coverage including:
- trip cancellation
- trip interruption
- travel delay
- baggage and personal effects
- baggage delay
- emergency evacuation
- travelers assistance
- medical expense
Some plans may also include, Accidental Death, Flight Accidental Death, and Rental Car coverage.
2. Medical Plans
Most travel plans are specifically designed to provide medical coverage while you are on your trip. However, many group and individual health insurance plans won't cover you outside of your coverage area, or will restrict coverage to emergencies only. Call your health insurance provider to determine what you will be covered for before deciding on the amount of coverage to buy.
3. Flight Accidental Death plans
Many travel plans include a limited form of Accidental Death coverage while you are boarding, flying on, or arriving from a flight. Some plans include coverage as part of a package of insurance and others offer it as an option.
4. Medical Evacuation/Repatriation
Some travel plans include, or have been specifically designed for, medical evacuation/repatriation coverage. This coverage is designed to evacuate a seriously ill or injured person to the nearest medical facility, and in some cases back home.
