Student health insurance is excellent security against those fall
allergies, winter colds, and spring fever. If icy dorm stairs send you
to the student clinic, you'll be comforted to know you won't have to
spend your book allowance on a cast.
These days having proof of an existing insurance plan may be required by
your school. While some institutions offer a plan for their students, it
won't be tailored specifically to you and it may be more expensive than
one you can select with a little research.
Already have dependent or employee coverage?
But why get student health insurance when you may be covered under
another plan as a student dependent? While many family plans will still
cover a young adult when they are studying, coverage may drop if credit
hours do.
Employer-provided group medical coverage may also have restrictions on
part-time employees. If you are covered by your parents or your
employer, be sure to check your existing policy for requirements and
restrictions.
Make health insurance your design.
You will need to make sure the student health insurance you ultimately
choose will meet your medical needs. For example, if you play on the
football team you'll need to make sure your plan covers sports-related
injuries and even physical therapy. Hay fever? Check for prescription
drug costs and referral requirements for an allergist.

What about the customer service aspect of insurance?
Just as with auto insurance, check out the company?s customer report.
Saving money is great, but you?ll want an insurance agent you can reach
when you have a question on your policy. You may want to search the
internet for their customer ratings or comments.
Obtaining student health insurance may be less expensive than a typical
individual health insurance policy. You can also shop for a plan with a
deductible and co-pay that works best with your college budget as well
as your medical needs.
