The Dangers of Being Uniformed About Medicare Supplemental InsuranceDecember 2007
Holiday season coincides with open enrollment for
Medicare supplemental insurance for drug coverage, and medical coverage regulators are warning that an increasing number of unscrupulous insurance agents also view it as open season for preying on older adults who aren't well informed about their health insurance plans.
In particular, the sheer complexity of Medicare, alongside the variety of plans available, can make it difficult for seniors seeking coverage to know what type of coverage they need and to compare that alongside the kind of costs that can be accrued when they need to rely on that coverage.
Making an informed decision can mean sifting through several different health insurance plans and talking to several agents. Doing so though can mean dramatic differences in what you get, so it's typically time well-spent.
One thing to remember is that door-to-door Medicare supplemental insurance plans tend to be fraudulent (and certainly
very suspect at best!), so it's best to speak directly to an agent from your chosen agency no matter where you've found them--online
or offline.

It's important to only sign up for
health insurance plans where you have full disclosure, which chances are will take mo
re than just a few minutes. Also, remember to contact your doctor(s)
before you enroll to ensure they accept this new plan.
Any reputable agents will be willing to compare plans and show you how their Medicare supplemental insurance plan stacks up against other offerings when it comes to both costs and coverage, so feel very confident in asking for them to do so.
Finally, before signing up always research a variety of insurance plans, and compare costs and coverage among them all. This way you're less likely to end up with medical coverage for things you don't need or added cost you don't want.
