Misinformation Over Health Plans and the Healthcare Bill Runs Rampant
August 2010
As more and more of the mandates attached to the new healthcare bill begin to take effect, the White House has embarked on an informational campaign designed to clarify many of the myths surrounding its new
medical coverage plan.
According to USA Today, these myths surrounding the
healthcare bill have led many people to fear the health plans and options that will be available to them in coming years.
For example, many people believe that "the new health care bill will cut Medicare for seniors," which the article states is flatly untrue.
Other medical coverage fears include health care "rationing," so-called "death panels," and the existence of a public option for insurance, none of which are true.
Seniors seem to be the main targets for misinformation regarding the upcoming
health plans, an issue that the AARP has attempted to address with new informational announcements featuring Andy Griffith.

Misconceptions regarding health plans in America are specifically targeted at seniors?

The real options that will be available to seniors will include free annual wellness exams, and rebate checks designed to help them pay for medications.
Younger folks are misinformed as well, many of them not yet aware of new medical coverage options, including coverage for dependent children up to age 26 and federally funded pools for those with pre-existing conditions.
With so many fears and misunderstandings circulating about the healthcare bill and these new health plans, officials fear that people won't take advantage of them, and continue to overpay for health insurance that doesn't cover them like it should.
