While the cat's away the mice will play; or, in the case of a Congressional stalemate regarding how to formulate an affordable health insurance plan, while the President's away, Republicans and Democrats will apparently drop the ball.

At least, that's how it's beginning to appear. With President Obama on his way back from a 7-day trip to Russia, Italy and Ghana, Republicans and Democrats seem to be failing in terms of his August deadline for a new medical coverage bill.

The arguments are still the same, and progress in dealing with them is taking quite a long time. According to the Associated Press, House Democrats have "proposed raising taxes on wealthy Americans" to pay for an affordable health insurance plan that would extend coverage to the 47 million citizens currently getting by without medical coverage.

Republicans have called such a plan "rash and irresponsible," and with 2010 elections on the horizon, no one wants to rock the boat in their party and endanger their political potential for another term.

Other factors include a government-run medical coverage plan, which will be either a bloated and messy substitute for real coverage, or the answer to affordable health insurance for America's lower/middle class citizens, depending on who you listen to.

Medical Coverage

Did you know...
There are 47 million Americans currently without coverage?
There's also the fear that taxing some employer-provided benefits could drive businesses under, even with small business health insurance exemptions.

Either way, it's not looking likely that Obama's August deadline will be feasible, though the President is purportedly still confident that some kind of health care reform will be completed by the end of the year.
