Lack of Comprehensive Cancer Insurance Policies Leads to Bankruptcy
June 2011
Everyone knows that
medical coverage costs are expensive, but a new study linking cancer and bankruptcy demonstrates just how sickness can be financially devastating.
The study, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology, finds that individuals diagnosed with cancer a more than twice as likely to declare bankruptcy as everyone else.
Why? Much of it has to do with the scarcity of good
cancer insurance policies, as well as the overall unavailability of affordable medical coverage for many people.
Men and women suffering from cancer are much less likely to work - their treatment makes it very difficult to do so. A loss of employment means that they are very unlikely to have medical coverage to rely on when they need it most.
And with the traditional shortage of insurance plans available to those with pre-existing conditions, finding a good cancer insurance policy has been almost impossible.
In the last year medical coverage for pre-existing conditions became more available on a national level due to provisions provided by the new
health care law.

Did you know...
Individuals suffering from cancer are twice as likely to declare bankruptcy as other Americans?

The goal of these provisions is to make it possible for the sickest Americans to get the medical care they need. The study linking cancer and bankruptcy is based on cancer insurance statistics taken before the provisions went into effect.
Hopefully, those men and women grappling with this terrible disease will have greater access to healthcare in the future, and relief from both physical and economic suffering.
