How the GOP Will Handle Individual Health Insurance
November 2010
The votes are in and the Republican Party is enjoying a new surge of party members in the House. So, what will this mean for healthcare reform and
medical coverage in America?
So far that depends on who you talk to.
The Republican party ran on a rhetoric of dramatic change to be enacted upon the healthcare bill, but according to most analysts,
individual health insurance reform will be hard to accomplish.
With Democrats still holding a majority in the Senate, any drastic changes to the healthcare bill will likely be stopped there. And even if they weren't, they would almost certainly be vetoed in the White House.
What Republicans
can do, however, is change the way the
healthcare bill is implemented, particularly in terms of funding. If funding is held up, many of the costlier benefits of the medical coverage bill can be delayed, if not held up indefinitely.

Individual Health Insurance prices could change to reflect even more healthcare reform?

Insurance industry leaders see this change of political hands as an opportunity to remove parts of the bill that they don't like. Ronald Williams, Aetna's chief executive, suggests that the state-run insurance exchanges designed to offer lower cost individual health insurance can now be "debated" with new political leaders.
Individual health insurance has been the topic of much concern in recent months, as insurance companies alternately raise premiums, or simply cancel plans altogether in light of new mandates for coverage put in place by the healthcare bill.
What likely
won't be challenged is the mandate requiring all Americans purchase medical coverage by the year 2014. While many people and legislators questioned the legality of the mandate, insurance companies were supportive of it and could stand to gain millions of new customers if the mandate stays in place.
