In this country, right now, there are 46.5 million people without medical coverage, mostly due to the incredibly high costs of individual health insurance or family insurance. Not having a health plan to protect them costs the uninsured very dearly when they fall ill, but unfortunately they're not the only ones who pay.

According to sentinelandenterprise.com, state taxpayers "have been paying millions of dollars more per year" for the individual health insurance or family medical coverage of state employees. Combined with the billions we already pay for the uninsured who become ill, citizens on all levels are paying way too much for the high costs of someone else's insurance.

Chris Murphy, spokesman for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, says that "the biggest factor for rising health insurance costs is new technology in the medical industry." Meaning that new drugs and new methods of treating illnesses are boosting the costs for the average health plan. But what good does it do to have such innovations of millions of people can't afford them?

The article also warns that as people age, it's going to "cost them more and more" for individual health insurance, leading many who qualify for medicare to pay for supplemental insurance too. As Medicare costs rise, so will taxes, leading yet again to a burden for taxpayers.

The argument that all Americans should have a national health plan is embraced by many, but considered ineffective by others. Measures taken to design national medical coverage have tended to fall through when lawmakers are put to the test.

So how does the average taxpayer pay for their own medical coverage as well as the taxes accrued for some else's?

By shopping around, and only purchasing the health plan that they need. Fortunately, many health insurance agents today offer coverage tailored to the needs of the individual, instead of forcing everyone to pay for the same plan.

Until health insurance becomes a real priority on the national stage, shopping carefully and finding the best and most efficient coverage out there is the only break we will see from health industry costs.
