The discussion of medical coverage in Thursday's much anticipated health care summit was at times confrontational, and surprisingly unsuccessful for a meeting that took 7 hours to complete.

So, was anything decided upon regarding individual health insurance rates?

Well, not really.

The media mostly focused on the rhetorical skills of President Obama, some going so far as to refer to him as the "schoolmaster" in a room full of disorderly students.

It's easy to see why. The squabbling over medical coverage that the public has witnessed in recent months does indeed make Congress look juvenile and self-obsessed. While Republicans and Democrats argue over who should pay for what, Anthem Blue Cross in California decided to raise their rates for individual health insurance by 39% this year.

So, while everyone in Washington argues over what the American people need and want, they're not actually focusing on creating affordable medical coverage, which is indeed what they both need and want.

Facts on:

while everyone in Washington argues over what the American people need and want, they're not actually focusing on creating affordable medical coverage.

Did you know...
Anthem Blue Cross in California decided to raise their rates for individual health insurance by 39% this year.
Some topics did find support from both parties, such as the need to minimize fraud in Medicare, and to stop the practice of ending or deny insurance for those with pre-existing conditions.

But no word yet on how to make those things happen.

Right now finding individual health insurance with a pre-existing condition is like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Hopefully that won't always be the case. Anthem's price hikes are under investigation, and other insurance company abuses have been receiving negative press in the last year.

It appears that the public outcry over such behavior is finally getting attention from our lawmakers. The question is, how long will they take to get their act together, actually make some laws?
