Is Small Business Health Insurance Really Available to All?Sept 2007
According to the
Orlando Business Journal Florida health insurance ought to be easier to come by for the self employed this month.
The Florida Association of Health Underwriters insists that small business health insurance is now available to all self-employed Floridians, and they cannot be denied medical coverage because of pre-existing health conditions (at least for this month).
"Self employed Floridians need only show documentation of running an active business when applying," and "coverage can be obtained from insurance companies or HMOs that write group coverage for groups between 1 and 50 employees in Florida."
The goal is for many of the uninsured in Florida to catch up, and apply for
small business health insurance while they can do so without being excluded for health conditions. But for many, a Florida health insurance policy is hard to get regardless. Costs for basic healthcare have gone up more than 80% in the last 10 years, and when you're struggling to get a business off the ground, every penny counts.

But at the same time, small business health insurance can cost less than standard
individual Florida health insurance because of its status as a group policy. Since group policies are less likely to produce expensive claims, many insurance agencies look favorably on those who apply for them.
Just be sure you know what's covered and what's not, what the employee's responsibility is and what the employer must cover, and what kind of flexibility the plan offers employees. By taking advantage of this month's lower priced enrollment many business owners can save themselves money, can attract employees, and can rest assured that the health and safety of their workplace is covered.
