Many seniors today ask, should I purchase Medicare supplemental insurance, even when I qualify for Medicare Part-D? Is it possible for these health insurance agencies to offer decent prices and discount prescription drugs. And can I do so by purchasing affordable medical insurance?

These kinds of questions circulating among seniors today reveal anxiety regarding health care and economics, as prescription drug use skyrockets alongside the costs for both the drugs they need and the insurance that should be protecting them. Medicare Part D has helped a lot of American seniors to pay for the many prescription medications they need. But, what about those unlucky people who fall into the dreaded "donut hole?"

The "donut hole" includes about 20% of seniors whose total prescription drug costs are not covered by Part-D. For these men and women, Medicare supplemental insurance would definitely be helpful. As it says at American Medical News, there are some Part-D plans that require Medicare beneficiaries whose total prescription drug costs reach $2400 to pay 100% of those costs until $3850 dollars is spent out of pocket.

For these individuals, Medicare does not offer them access to discount prescription drugs, or to coverage for the medicines they need; they have fallen into the terrible donut hole. And, as prescription drug use is predicted to keep growing, more and more seniors will find themselves in this same dangerous predicament.

Facts on:

Medicare Supplemental Insurance

Did you know...
20% of seniors' total drug costs are not covered by Part-D?
For many people, affordable medical insurance does exist in the form of Medicare supplemental insurance, and there are many plans that can cover the costs of medications. This is because they cover the generic forms of these same drugs, making discount prescription drugs a wonderful reality to the millions of people who need them to protect and maintain their health.

Of course, new and "improved" medicines come out every year, but usually at costs that are beyond what most people can afford. Until the prices come down for those drugs it's wise to continue to rely on generic drugs; and for those senioirs who fall into the dreaded "donut hole" of Medicare Part D, Medicare supplemental insurance can ease the burden a bit, until more affordable medical insurance is made available to all Americans, regardless of their age or condition of health.
