As presidential nominations inch closer and closer, various candidates are working hard to convince the American public that they understand today's medical insurance coverage dilemma. In all the chatter, it might be hard to figure out exactly who wants to change what in the health care system, and to understand how one health insurance plan is different from another.

So here is a quick rundown of which leading candidates believe in what when it comes to your medical needs:

Of the Democrats, Senator Hillary Clinton wants to offer a health insurance plan with an estimated to cost about $110 billion per year, and which would require all Americans to get medical insurance coverage. This plan would be funded through subsidies and tax breaks, and an end to discrimination against those with pre-existing conditions.

John Edwards is also offering a proposal that requires health insurance for all and is estimated to cost about $120 billion per year. It forces private companies, government and individuals to share responsibility for obtaining coverage. It also creates new tax credits, expands Medicaid and the federal-state children's health insurance plan, and takes steps to contain health care costs.

And Barack Obama's health insurance plan provides health coverage for almost all Americans. It creates a national public insurance program to allow individuals and small businesses to buy affordable health care similar to that available to federal employees. No one will be turned way or charged more due to illness and everyone who needs it will receive a subsidy for their premiums.

For Republicans, Rudy Giuliani has a medical insurance coverage plan in mind that would entail income exclusion of up to $15,000 for those without employer coverage in order to make insurance more affordable. He also proposes health insurance credits to low-income Americans to help make coverage more affordable to the uninsured, and calls for reforms to medical liability legal system to end frivolous lawsuits.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is offering a health care coverage plan that expands and deregulates the private insurance market to decrease costs and give more Americans access to affordable care; and, he also offers tax breaks and other incentives to those without insurance.

Choosing Health Insurance

Did you know...
Both Republicans and Democrats are thinking about health insurance plans for the millions of Americans still searching for the best and most affordable coverage?
And Mitt Romney wants to offer a health insurance plan that grants a refundable $2,500 tax credit, and $5,000 for families; his plan would promote open health care markets by letting providers practice nationwide, rather than restricting them regionally.

Which plan will get the most approval? Will it work? There's no way to know until 2008, but one thing is for sure, with both Republicans and Democrats aware of today's health care coverage issues, there will be some exciting change on the way for the millions of Americans still searching for that perfect health insurance plan.
