Why We Need Cheap Prescription Drugs FastJune, 2007
MSN Health has released a study on long-suffering migraine patients, revealing that the inflated cost of most individual health insurance plans, combined with poor quality coverage, is destroying patients' quality of life. The answer to this painful situation? Americans need access to cheap prescription drugs, and they need it fast.
As it states in the article: "insurance restrictions and out-of-pocket costs cause many migraine sufferers to not take medications when needed because they're concerned about running out of the drugs." The result? "The study also found that 79% of patients who waited to take pain medication said migraines had a severe negative impact on their quality of life, compared to 51% who took their medication at the first sign of a migraine."
The nationwide need for cheap prescription drugs has been gathering support lately, as another study recently found that older, non-white American citizens are delaying their use of important, potentially life-saving medications because of their high costs.
What's more, the rising costs of such medications and for expensive medical procedures are two more reasons why individual health insurance premiums are still going up;
group health insurance plans have also become more expensive, and they're less likely to cover such costs these days. As a result, health insurance agencies are absorbing the costs for newer and more expensive medications, and as pharmaceutical companies continue to push consumers and their doctors to use more prescriptions, the costs keep going up.

In searching for cheap prescription drugs many desperate people turn to the Internet, or even cross the border into Canada and Mexico for affordable substitutes. But this practice can be very dangerous; Internet "drug stores" often sell outdated or fake medications, and the same applies in other countries where there is less oversight for such matters.
For the time bing, the only thing consumers can really do is to compare health insurance plans, and keep searching for
individual health insurance that will cover generic drugs. It's also a good idea to ask your doctor about less expensive medications and treatments that can cost less than new or more costly versions. And, with enough people actively searching for these alternatives to expensive prescription drugs, pharmaceutical companies will be forced to lower costs in order to compete.
