According to the American Cancer Society, cancer death rates have stagnated, as recent declines level off into a plateau. And while smoking and failing to get necessary screenings are a major factor, the truth is that limited access to affordable health insurance is another big reason.

Just last month studies by the American Cancer Society also found that whether or not you have medical insurance impacts your cancer diagnosis. Those with coverage are more likely to be diagnosed earlier on, when their disease is treatable. Furthermore, there is even some conjecture that those individuals with medical insurance are less likely to get cancer in the first place.

Why? It has a lot to do with those missed cancer screenings. If there isn't any affordable health insurance out there to help you pay for them, who can afford expensive medical tests, even if they could save your life?

Of course lifestyle factors play a major part too. In terms of cancer smoking is most likely to cause the disease, along with being overweight or obese, and getting too much sun.

Did you know...
Women without health insurance and recent immigrants had the lowest levels of screening for breast cancer?
But often those people with medical insurance are attending yearly checkups where they can get advice from their doctors about these lifestyle decisions. It's in these important yearly appointments that individuals can be warned that they're heading down a dangerous path, and given advice on how to best alter their lifestyle decisions.

This is why it's so important for those in search of coverage to choose an affordable health insurance plan that still covers yearly wellness checkups. In doing so, they could be making a decision that could keep them cancer free, and help to bring the number of cancer deaths below that plateau.
