Can a Bipartisan Group Make Affordable Health Insurance a Reality?April 2008
This year has seen a lot of medical insurance news, with both Republican and Democratic presidential hopefuls raising health care issues in an effort to win public favor. But, will it be a bipartisan group that finally makes
affordable health insurance a reality?
In the news this week, former Senate Majority Leaders Bob Dole, Howard Baker, Tom Daschle and George Mitchell announced that they have formed a bipartisan coalition to develop a series of recommendations aimed at reforming the U.S. health care system, and will present them next year to Congress and the new president.
Will they make high-quality, affordable health insurance a reality for all Americans? It's not clear just yet. However, it's not as if these guys aren't used to taking on challenges. Between Dole and Mitchell alone, they helped negotiate peace in Northern Ireland, investigated the extent of steroid use in baseball and instigated broad changes in veterans' health care.
Now they're going to take on medical insurance in America, with the help of a series of health policy advisors and academics to add their input and advise them on how to better handle our health care situation.

Health care spending is rising at the fastest rate in our country's history?

The coalition, known as the Leaders' Project on the State of American Health Care, will oversee a public forum focusing on a single element of improving the medical insurance system, including quality of care, access to care, and of course, making affordable health insurance available to the 47 million Americans who can't afford coverage.
Just what the new president will do with the recommendations will depend upon who gets nominated. However, with Clinton, Obama, and McCain all featuring
medical insurance in their regular campaign speeches, it's clear that at least everyone understands the tremendous importance of this topic, and the dire need to make changes for the benefit of all Americans.
