In Search of Affordable Healthcare, a Statewide Health Coverage Plan May Be On the WayApril, 2007
Earlier this month, an all-encompassing
Arizona health insurance plan created to provide and expand upon the availability of a stripped-down health coverage plan was killed by the Senate Health Committee.
It was killed off for many reasons: for one, several legislators said they were not really convinced that these new policies would be any more affordable than those older policies already on the market; and, these newer versions didn't appear to offer the kind of coverage that most people really need.
But don't lose hope: affordable healthcare may still be on its way.
According to the
eastyvalleytribune.com, "the call for universal health care in Arizona has gone mainstream." And recently Town Hall meetings have been full to the brim with community leaders and citizens alike who are demanding a statewide program that would ensure that everyone has access to at least the basics of health coverage.
Too many families fall into the gap that is created when Arizona health insurance is too expensive, but those families make too much money to qualify for more affordable state sponsored health coverage. This is why the more popular programs like Kidscare have been instituted in Arizona; they protect the children of those people that most of us would call "middle class," but who can't find or hang on to affordable healthcare.
Around 18% of Arizona state residents are now uninsured, and only 45% of them are currently offered insurance from work. Worse yet, many of today's employers simply can't afford to offer health coverage for the families of their employees, leaving state residents scrambling for
affordable healthcare to protect their families. Too often they're coming up short.
The situation is certainly getting dire. More than 250,000 children in the state of Arizona are unable to go to the doctor today based on a lack of health insurance.

Hopefully we will soon see a statewide Arizona health insurance plan appear in legislature. With so many residents taking a stand, their lawmakers should feel impelled to make a change.
Until then, individuals and parents alike will have to continue searching for health insurance options that will protect them and their families should they need it without emptying their bank account or creating furthur undue financial hardship.
