Regardless of What Happens with the Children, Adults Still Need a Good Individual Health Insurance PlanSept 2007
Affordable medical insurance coverage has been in the news all week, as the House passed an expansion of the Children's Health Insurance Program just Wednesday, financed with more tobacco taxes, and through cuts in the subsidies to private Medicare insurance for older Americans. But at the same time, whether or not this expansion to CHIP will actually go through, there's still no valid plan for offering the working adults in this country an individual health insurance plan that is effective and affordable.
President Bush threatened to veto the House bill for CHIP, which was developed entirely by Democrats, and another more modest bipartisan measure that's also expected to win approval this week in the Senate. So, even still the success of the plan to cover millions of uninsured children is questionable. But one thing remains very sure: their parents still aren't getting any breaks in their ongoing search for affordable coverage.
According to
ABC News, "Only 66% of private full-time workers now have employer-sponsored health insurance, down from 80% in 1989." One reason for this is that there just aren't a whole lot of affordable medical insurance coverage plans available to choose from. The pressure of today's global market in the job sector, combined with growing health care costs, has made it very difficult for American businesses to offer good coverage to their employees.
This is why a serious renegotiation of our country's
individual health insurance plan has also been a hot topic in the news. Presidential hopefuls on both sides of the fence have offered up their own solutions for working adults, including everything from a full coverage universal insurance plan, to a more moderate plan involving various tax exemptions and perhaps mandatory coverage.

Did you know...
When parents don't have affordable medical insurance coverage, they're more likely to get sick?
|
But one thing is for sure, when parents don't have access to affordable medical insurance coverage, they're more likely to fall ill, and when they do get sick, it's going to cost them - and us - more. Sure, it's certainly important to protect the health of our children, no one disagrees with that, but with unhealthy parents facing the burden of medical debt, who will take proper care of those children in the first place?
For those people out there searching for an individual health insurance plan, it's a good idea to shop around aggressively, especially online, for plans that offer good yearly checkups. Those checkups are more likely to catch or even prevent major illnesses before they can become more dangerous, and more expensive.
