Medicare Part B is the second half of the original Medicare program approved by President Johnson in 1965. It's commonly known as the medical insurance portion of Medicare, and helps to pay for some of the services and products not covered by Part A.
Medicare Part B basically covers outpatient services, and many of the things done by a physician or nurse in their office or hospital. This can include x-rays, laboratory tests, vaccinations, blood transfusions, dialysis, chemotherapy, and even limited ambulance transportation.
In addition, Medicare Part B also covers what's called "durable medical equipment," or those medical devices that many people depend upon for day-to-day activities. These would include (among other items) canes, walkers, wheelchairs, some mobility scooters, prosthetic devices, and even oxygen for home use. Part B also covers one pair of eyeglasses following a cataract surgery.
If you're an older American, and still working, Medicare Part B is optional and can be deferred. There are complex rules involved in the management of Part B, and a lot of paperwork, so if you do decide you want to take advantage of this service it pays to take your time to review all the necessary rules and guidelines before you sign up.
