Healthcare Reform Could Spark Economic Growth

According to U.S. News & World Report, "Obama laid out an economic stimulus plan that positions health care as a cornerstone of financial growth and recovery." Not only does he plan to expand SCHIP and medicaid, but also to reduce wasteful spending and improve health care quality overall.

Professor and Chairman of health services at University of Florida, R. Paul Duncan stated,

"The thing that's really intriguing to me is, this seems to be nice recognition of how big and how important health care is a part of the economy."
It can't be denied that if those who feel they can't afford family health insurance go without needed medical attention and skip preventative check ups, we will all be paying for it in the end.

Family health insurance is needed to protect your family from even further financial woes, and even worse, more complicated health issues.

Obama's plan includes spending $20 billion to help doctors and hospitals upgrade to computerized medical records, and around $3 billion on preventative care. This will help to make health care more efficient, and therefore, less costly.

Obama has a large plate in front of him, but as you see, health care is a top priority.

Healthcare Expansion: One of Obama's First Bills?

It's no secret that healthcare coverage is a pressing issue for President-elect Obama. A bill passed yesterday in the House expanding healthcare coverage for children from low-income households.

According to All Headline News,

"...the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), covers 4 million more children. The measure will cost about $33 million over the next 4 1/2 years."

Obama's plan allows SCHIP benefits for those living at up to 200% of the poverty level. Although it covers many of the impoverished, don't expect the SCHIP plan to cover your family. It is wise to research and protect your family through affordable private family health insurance.

The bill passed as a result of the Democrats & Republicans working together. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the success "...a monumental achievement for our children, our country and certainly for this Congress."

Obama will be inaugurated next week and both the House and Senate are hoping to see this bill as one of Obama's first signed into law.

Massachusetts Healthcare Experiment: Full Healthcare Coverage Possible?

Massachusetts may be leading the way to full healthcare coverage with their on-going experiment.

According to The Daily Nightly MSNBC, the Massachusetts experiment requires that

"Employers with more than 10 workers must pay the state about $300 per worker if they don't offer health insurance and residents must pay a fine up to $900 a year - if they don't get some kind of health insurance."

In this experiment private individual health insurance has become more accessible due to an expansion of the Medicaid program, as well as legislation preventing insurance companies from using pre-existing conditions as cause for denial of coverage.

President-elect Obama has healthcare coverage reform as a priority and will surely look at the experiment.

Individual health insurance is really a responsibility and may become a requirement. Lack of healthcare coverage could lead to fines in the near future.

Private healthcare options are available for all your needs and it doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. Research your options and avoid the pitfalls of becoming an uninsured.

Temporary Health Insurance Costs

Last week the numbers from the Labor Department showed 7.2% rate of unemployment. Most Americans receive their healthcare coverage through their employers.

So what happens to your healthcare coverage when you're laid off?

Many of the recently unemployed have fallen into the growing pool of uninsured Americans.

COBRA provides short term health insurance for a variety of needs--including when employees are laid off.

When faced with a lay off consumers have the opportunity to continue their health insurance
benefits by paying out-of-pocket for COBRA. Even though it's a good option for many consumers, it's not for everyone.

A report by Families USA, a consumer advocacy agency, outlines some of the things to be mindful of with COBRA coverage.

Ron Pollack, Families USA's executive director, said Friday, "For the vast majority of workers laid off, they and their families are likely to join the ranks of the uninsured."

This is where a temporary health insurance plan, like COBRA, comes in.

Unfortunately, many individuals and families aren't aware of temporary health insurance or COBRA, and because of this, sometimes they'll choose to forgo medical attention or go into medical debt.

The lesson? Not having health coverage can be very risky business.

No matter what your health insurance need, rates vary--sometimes drastically. So, as with many things, shopping around for temporary health insurance can mean a big difference in the monthly budget and can help any out-of-work person and their family remain secure in the event of unexpected medical emergencies.

Small business owners need to keep their eye on all costs, including the growing cost of employee health insurance. Perhaps with the new Congress, help might be on the way.

With the new 2009 Congress it looks like 24 congress members have small business background backgrounds according to by Raymond Flandez in the Wall Street Journal blogs.

Nice.

With more than one third of the new members in the freshman class of 2009 (24 of 61) having these small business connections as entrepreneurs or investors of some kind, he says,

"Their expertise is much needed in issues important to small-business owners and entrepreneurs who represent 99.7% of all employer firms. Health care reform, access to capital, tax equity and energy reform seem to be on this year's agenda."

Of these 24 members, here's how they break down:

Senate House of Representatives
Mark Begich (D-Alaska)

Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.)

Jim Risch (R-Idaho)

Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.)

Mark Warner (D-Va.)

Jared Polis (D-Colo., 2nd District)

Kurt Schrader (D-Ore., 5th District)

Aaron Schock (R-Ill., 18th District)

Harry Teague (D-N.M., 2nd District)

With their personal involvement in small business, these new members are no strangers to having to make tough decisions.

So, with that in mind, we'd like to congratulate the new members on winning their seats and give them our support to making the tough choices and getting things done to like putting in place appropriate measures to help businesses with things like small business health insurance.
