According to the The Wall Street Journal president elect Barack Obama's healthcare reform looks to be financially off the charts. Take a look at what the Baucus plan will do to health insurance for small business owners.

Small business owners would have to create a health care plan that will "address certain government standards or pay a percentage of company payroll (perhaps 6% or 7%) to the government so that it can provide coverage for the employees."

That's quite a hefty tax burden to place on the average small business owner. And that's only the begining. We're talking about an extra $200 to $300 billion dollars to what we already spend which is $2.3 trillion.

Is a consensus on small business health insurance finally at hand?

According to The Wall Street Journal there may finally be some change on the small business health insurance front. I know, there's that word again, "change".

Sounds like such a cliche but I for one am a believer. Strangely, for a man who's facing so much turmoil, President elect Barack Obama appears to have a strong wind of positive force pushing him forward.

Conservatives have feared that Obama is too liberal but it appears that he's more practical then an ideologue. One thing for certain is he's going to have to pay special attention to small businesses because he's focused so much on the middle class. At the top of the health insurance reform there must be special attention for affordable small business health insurance.

The article mentions tax breaks for small business. It makes sense. A comprehensive plan where we all share and pitch in is the only sensible way to get at the root of affordable small business health insurance.

In any event as it stands right now, we're all sharing the load anyway as it's reflected in our health insurance premiums, regardless of how we label things.

Prepared For Open Enrollment Period?

Most employers offer an "open enrollment period" for their health insurance benefits around this time every year. Have you reviewed your family health insurance options lately?

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger if you haven't (or won't) read through your insurance policy this fall. Human resource group Hewitt Associates says that about sixty percent of the employees they surveyed just allow their family health insurance benefits to roll over each year without making changes.

Why?

Well, for one, many health insurance policies are not written for the Average Joe, but rather for those within the industry. In addition, the amount of information to read through can be overwhelming. If an employee is confused or frustrated with the language of their policy, they are likely to choose a policy once and be done with it, rather than scouring through many options to find the differences.

Another reason many do not compare plans every enrollment season: no time. On average, employees select their initial family health insurance plan in under thirty minutes. If so little time is used to compare before purchasing the first time, odds are that employees won't spend much time revising their options during open enrollment periods either.

Sometimes the current plan doesn't fit your lifestyle as well as you would like, whether it be lack of coverage where you need it or plenty of coverage where you don't. Spending the time and comparing plans during open enrollment periods may have you purchasing a health insurance policy that is just right.

If your eyes glaze over when you read through your coverage options or if you don't have the time to sort through your health needs on your own, our partners can help assess your needs to make sure you are paying for a policy well-suited to you and your family.
